Why Coaches Struggle to Explain What They Do
Have you ever been asked what you do for work…and found yourself giving a very long answer?
You start explaining that you’re a coach, and before you know it, you’re talking about mindset, relationships, confidence, communication, boundaries, parenting…hoping somewhere in all of that the other person will understand what you actually do.
Most coaches have had that moment.
Someone asks a simple question, and suddenly you feel like you need five minutes to explain your work.
Usually, the problem isn’t that you don’t know what you do, but that you’re trying to explain too much.
I see this all the time when I talk with coaches. They care deeply about helping people, and they can see so many different ways they could support someone. So when they describe their work, they often include everything they are capable of helping with.
The problem is that when we say too many things at once, people have a hard time understanding where they fit.
Someone might hear your description and think, “That sounds interesting,”…but they don’t immediately recognize themselves in what you are saying.
And that recognition is what often leads someone to reach out for help.
Inside the Club, we talk a lot about something called O.F.T.™.
When coaches feel stuck or overwhelmed in their business, it’s often because they are trying to focus on too many things at once. They’re trying to talk to many different audiences, solve many different problems, and create content that covers a wide range of topics.
But when you slow down and focus on one thing, your message begins to get clearer.
You start talking about a specific problem, start speaking directly to a specific group of people, and suddenly, your work becomes much easier to explain.
The goal isn’t to list every way you could help someone. The goal is to help the right people recognize themselves in what you do.
Once that happens, the conversation changes. Instead of wondering what you do, people begin asking how they can work with you.
That’s the power of clarity, and often it begins with choosing one thing to focus on first.

P.S. If you’d rather talk things through, you’re always welcome to book a call with me. I always enjoy hearing about the businesses coaches are building and helping them figure out their next step.
