Why Am I So Overwhelmed? 9 Hidden Reasons You Feel Stuck
Aug 03, 2026There have been days where my to-do list looked completely reasonable.
- Answer a few emails
- Finish a presentation
- Review a proposal
- Record a video
- Call a client
Nothing impossible…right?:)
But instead of doing any of those things, I found myself standing in front of my desk, pulling everything out of one drawer then convincing myself it needed to be organized.
So I sorted paperclips, found old business cards, and shredded papers I hadn’t looked at in years. An hour later, my drawer looked great…but my to-do list hadn’t changed.
If you’ve ever done something similar, you’re not alone. Many people think they’re lazy but that’s not the case. You’re not procrastinating because you don’t care. It’s because you’re overwhelmed.
Overwhelm has a funny way of convincing us that almost anything feels easier than the thing we actually need to do.
A recent survey found that 36% of business owners say mental health challenges affect their ability to work at least once every week, and for entrepreneurs under 40, that number jumps to 60%.
So if you’ve been wondering…
- “Why can’t I just focus?”
- “Why does everything feel so hard?”
- “Why do I keep busying myself with the wrong things?”
You’re asking the wrong question. The better question is: What’s really causing the overwhelm?
If you’re wondering why you feel stuck, one (or more) of these reasons is probably getting in your way.
9 Reasons You Feel Overwhelmed
- You’re trying to keep everything in your head.
Your brain is juggling appointments, ideas, emails, errands, and conversations. - Everything feels equally important.
When every task feels urgent, it’s hard to know where to begin, so you end up beginning nowhere. - You’re constantly switching between tasks.
Every time you jump from one thing to another, your brain has to reset. That mental switching adds up quickly. - You have too many unfinished tasks.
Every project you’ve started but haven’t finished continues to take up mental space. - You’re waiting until you feel ready.
You keep telling yourself you’ll start when you have more time, more energy, or more confidence but that day rarely arrives. - You struggle to say no.
Every commitment you accept leaves you with less time and energy for what matters most. - You’re carrying an invisible mental load.
Planning, remembering, anticipating, and making decisions all day long is exhausting, even if no one else can see it. - You’re trying to do everything perfectly.
Perfectionism doesn’t reduce stress. It usually creates more of it. - You’re asking yourself the wrong question.
Instead of asking, “How do I get everything done?” start asking, “What’s the one thing that matters most right now?”
That last question changed everything for me.
I spent years believing I needed a better planner, a better system, or more hours in the day. What I actually needed was a better question.
Instead of trying to do everything, I learned to focus on one thing.
That’s where the O.F.T.™ Method began.
