READY TO GET UNSTUCK?

What Is the O.F.T.™ Method? A Simple Framework to Overcome Overwhelm

overwhelm Aug 03, 2026

One of my coaching clients looked at me one day and said,

“Jen, I don’t even know where to start anymore.”

She wasn’t sitting around doing nothing. In fact, she was working incredibly hard. But every day ended the same way.

She still felt behind.

The problem was that she was trying to do everything at once. That’s when I shared something that has completely changed the way I approach work, life, and overwhelm.

I asked her, “What’s your One F*cking Thing?”

She laughed. Then she stopped.

Because nobody had ever given her permission to focus on just one thing before.

That question became the foundation of the O.F.T.™ Method.

What Is the O.F.T.™ Method?

The O.F.T.™ Method stands for One F*cking Thing. It’s a simple way to cut through the noise when your brain feels overloaded.

Instead of asking, “How do I get everything done?” ask, “What’s the one thing that deserves my attention right now?”

It doesn’t mean the other things don’t matter but that they don’t all matter at this exact moment.

Why It Works

When we try to split our attention between ten different priorities, we make slower decisions, lose focus, and often finish the day feeling like we’ve been busy without making real progress.

Choosing one thing helps you:

  • Reduce mental clutter.
  • Make decisions more easily.
  • Finish what you start.
  • Build momentum instead of frustration.
  • Feel calmer and more in control.

What O.F.T.™ Looks Like in Real Life

O.F.T.™ isn’t about doing one thing all day. It’s about doing one thing at a time.

That might look like:

  • Closing your email while you write a proposal.
  • Finishing one presentation before starting another.
  • Putting your phone away while you spend time with your family.
  • Completing today’s priority before worrying about tomorrow’s.

People often think O.F.T.™ is about becoming more productive but it isn’t. It’s about becoming more present. When you’re fully engaged in one task, you’re more likely to do it well, finish it, and move on with less stress. Ironically, focusing on less often helps you accomplish more.

Your O.F.T.™ Moment

The next time you feel overwhelmed, don’t ask yourself how you’ll get everything done.

Instead, pause and ask:

“What’s my One F*cking Thing right now?”

Then give yourself permission to do just that.
