A Simple Exercise to Help You Discover Your Coaching Niche
I remember talking with a coach who told me she had been trying to figure out her niche for months.
She had notebooks full of ideas, lists of people she could help, and several different directions she thought her coaching business could go. Every time she felt close to deciding, another idea would pop into her mind, and she would start questioning everything again.
By the time we spoke, she felt more confused than when she started.
That’s when I suggested something simple.
Instead of trying to choose a niche by thinking about every possibility, we started looking at the clues that were already showing up in her life.
Sometimes your niche isn’t something you invent but something you discover by paying attention to the patterns that are already there.
Here is a simple exercise you can try if you’re feeling stuck.
Step 1: Think about the conversations people already come to you for.
Take a few minutes and write down the kinds of things friends, colleagues, or family members naturally ask you about. These conversations often reveal the areas where people already see you as helpful or knowledgeable.
Step 2: Look at your own life experiences.
Many coaches are drawn to help people through something they have experienced themselves. It might be parenting challenges, career changes, relationships, personal growth, or navigating a difficult season of life.
Write down a few experiences that have shaped you and the lessons you learned along the way.
Step 3: Notice the overlap.
Now look at the two lists you just created. Are there any connections between the conversations people bring to you and the experiences you have lived through?
That overlap is often where your niche begins to take shape.
Inside the Club, we talk a lot about O.F.T.™. When your business feels overwhelming, the solution is usually to stop trying to solve everything at once and focus on one thing that will move you forward.
For many coaches, that one thing is getting clear on their niche and message.
You don’t need to have the perfect answer today. But when you start paying attention to the patterns in your life and the people you feel drawn to help, your direction often becomes much clearer.
