4 Questions That Can Help You Clarify Your Coaching Message

clarity coaching messaging

One of the things I notice when visiting coaches’ websites is how often their message feels a little… complicated.

You read a paragraph describing their work, and by the end you’re still not completely sure who they help or what kind of problem they solve. The words sound thoughtful and caring, but something about the message feels hard to grasp.

And this happens to good coaches all the time.

Most coaches genuinely care about helping people, and they can see many ways their work could make a difference. They might help with confidence, communication, relationships, parenting, stress, boundaries…all of those things may be true.

The challenge is that when we try to say everything at once, people have a harder time understanding what we actually do.

Clarity usually comes from simplifying the message.

If you’re working on clarifying how you describe your coaching, here is a small exercise I often suggest. It only takes a few minutes, but it can bring surprising insight.

Take a piece of paper or open a document and write down your answers to these four questions.

  1. Who do I help?
Think about the group of people you feel most drawn to supporting right now. Instead of trying to include everyone, focus on the people you understand best.
  2. What problem are they struggling with?
People usually begin looking for a coach when something in their life feels stuck or difficult. When your message speaks directly to that challenge, it becomes easier for someone to recognize that you may be able to help them.
  3. What changes for them after working with you?
What feels different in their life once they’ve done the work with you? This helps describe the transformation your coaching creates.
  4. Why does this work matter to you?
Many coaches are drawn to their work because of something they have experienced themselves. When your message connects to something meaningful in your own story, it tends to feel more authentic.

Inside the Club, we often come back to the idea of O.F.T.™.

When coaches feel confused about their message, it’s often because they are trying to talk about too many things at once. But when you focus on one audience and one core problem, your message becomes much easier for people to understand.

And when people understand what you do, they are much more likely to reach out and start a conversation.
